I wanted to create a site where I can tell people about wolves. The reason is, there are hundreds of wolves being hunted every year. These beautiful creatures are hunted to near extinction. I'm creating a petition to save the wolves. I want people to know about these animals, and if you want to add your name to the petition, then go ahead. I want to make a differance.

You ain't nothin' but a hound dog!

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Canis rufus

The red wolf (Canis rufus) is smaller than the gray wolf. (Canis lupus) They weigh between 45-80 pounds. They are mostly brown and buff colored sometimes with red shading around their ears, muzzle, and the backs of their legs. Red wolves are known to hunt alone and in packs. They eat whit-tailed deer, raccoons, and small mammals such as rabbits and rodents. They have been known to prey on demestic pets and livestock, but it's not very common.

Canis lupus

The photo to the right is a picture of a Canis lupus. That is the scientific name for gray wolf. This is the most common wolf in the world, but, it has many different names. In the eastern woodlands it is called the timber wolf, in the arctic it is known as the arctic wolf. And in the tundra it is known as the tundra wolf or the snow wolf. In fact, the rain forest and true desert areas are the only areas it has not adapted to. The gray wolf is the largest of the canines. The gray wolf comes in many differant colors despite it's name. It comes in white, brown, gray, black, and occasionaly a tawny color. The males are 20% larger than the females and both sexes get larger the farther north they are found.

Wolf Wonders

Gray Wolf- Canis lupus

Height 26-32 inches at the shoulder
Length 4.5-6.5 feet from nose to tip of tail
Weight 55-130 lbs; Males are typically heavier and taller than the females
Lifespan 7-8 years in the wild, but some have lived 10 years or more

There is an estimated 7,000 to 11,200 wolves in Alaska and more than 5,000 in the lower 48 states. Around the world there are an estimated 200,000 in 57 countries, but in the early years there was over 2 million.

Range
Wolves were once common throughout all of North America but were killed in most areas of the United States by the mid 1930s. Today their range has been reduced to Canada and the following portions of the United States: Alaska, Idaho, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Mexican wolves are found in New Mexico and Arizona.
Thanks to the reintroduction of wolves in 1995, Yellowstone National Park is one of the most favored places to see and hear wolves in the native habitat.

Behavior
Wolves live, travel and hunt in packs of 4-7 animals on average. Packs include the mother and father wolves, called the alphas, their pups and several other subordinate or young animals. The alpha female and male are the pack leaders that track and hunt prey, choose den sites and establish the pack's territory. Wolves develop close relationships and strong social bonds. They often demonstrate deep affection for their family and may even sacrifice themselves to protect the family unit. Wolves have a complex communication system ranging from barks and whines to growls and howls. While they don’t howl at the moon, they do howl more when it’s lighter at night, which occurs more often when the moon is full.

Threats
The most common cause of death for wolves is conflict with people over livestock losses. While wolf predation on livestock is fairly uncommon, wolves that do prey on them are often killed to protect the livestock. Some livestock owners are developing non-lethal methods to reduce the chances of a wolf attacking their livestock. These methods include fencing livestock, lighting, alarm systems and removing dead or dying livestock that may attract carnivores like wolves. Another serious threat is human encroachment into wolf territory, which leads to habitat loss for wolves and their prey species.
Overall, the greatest threat to wolves is people’s fear and misunderstanding about the species. Many fairy tales and myths tend to misrepresent wolves as villainous, dangerous creatures.

Mating Season- January to Febuary
Gestation- 63 days
Litter Size- 4-7 pups
Pups are born blind and defensless. The pack cares for the pups until they mature at about 10 months of age.

Red Wolf- Canis rufus

Height: About 26 inches at shoulders
Length: 4.5-5.5 feet long (including the tail)
Weight: 50-80 lbs
Lifespan: 6-7 years in the wild; up to 15 years in captivity

The red wolf is a smaller and a more slender cousin of the gray wolf. It is gray-black, with a reddish cast that gives it the color for which it is named.

Diet
The red wolf’s diet consists primarily of small mammals such as rabbits and rodents. Also known to eat insects, berries and occasionally deer.

Population
Almost hunted to the brink of extinction, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service rounded up fewer than 20 pure red wolves to be bred in captivity in 1980. As of August 2005, approximately 165 captive red wolves reside at 38 captive breeding facilities across the United States. Thanks to these programs, nearly 100 red wolves currently live in the wild.

Range
Historically, red wolves ranged throughout the southeastern United States from Pennsylvania to Florida and as far west as Texas. Today, wild populations roam more than 1.5 million acres throughout northeastern North Carolina, including Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.

Behavior
Red wolves are primarily nocturnal (active at night), and communicate by scent marking, vocalizations (including howling), facial expressions and body postures.
Shy and secretive, red wolves hunt alone or in small packs -- complex social structures that include the breeding adult pair (the alpha male and female) and their offspring. Red wolves tend to form pair-bonds for life.
Size of the pack varies with the size of available prey populations. A hierarchy of dominant and subordinate animals within the pack helps it to function as a unit. Dens are often located in hollow trees, stream banks and sand knolls.

Threats
Threats to the red wolf include habitat loss due to human development, negative attitudes that hinder restoration, severe weather, deaths by motor vehicles, and illegal killings. Interbreeding between coyote and red wolf populations has remained a constant threat to the recovery of this imperiled species.

Reproduction
Mating Season- Late winter
Gestation- 60-63 days.
Litter size- 2-8 pups

Fun Gray Wolf Facts

 1) Gray wolves communicate through scent marking, vocalizing(howling), facial expressions, and body positions.

 2) They are territorial animals.
